Nicknamed "Big Boy" during his time in the service, Quiren M. Groessl grew up in a German-American family in Wisconsin. He was a corporal in the Fifth Wisconsin Regiment, one of the Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard units that were organized into the 32nd Division of the United States Army. On May 27, 1918, Groessl was captured in a German raid on American lines. He suffered a brutal bayonet wound when he tried to escape.
