During the early 19th century, the Russian Orthodox Church turned its attention to missionary work within Russia, particularly in the remote areas of Siberia and the Russian Far East. The missionary effort was part of a larger drive to introduce the culture and language of European Russia to the native peoples that lived in these areas. Several missionary societies were established as part of this process, including the Altay (Altai) Spiritual Mission, founded by Makarii (Mikhail Yakovlevich Glukharev, 1792‒1847) in 1830 in the village of Biysk.
